Description
***This course is not available for the Track C July/August learning period.***
In How’d They Do It? you’ll step into the shoes of some of the world’s most famous artists and discover how they created their masterpieces. Each block, you’ll learn about a different artist, explore their style and techniques, and then make your own artwork inspired by what you’ve learned. This is a hands-on, project-based art class where you’ll get to experiment, play, and bring your own creativity to life while connecting with art history in a meaningful way.
Quarter A focuses on foundations and classic inspirations. You’ll study artists like Miró, Picasso, O’Keeffe, Matisse, Hokusai, Monet, and Michelangelo. The projects emphasize exploring line, shape, texture, and color, while learning how these masters transformed the art world with new ideas and techniques. Think collage, impressionist painting, close-up floral studies, and even a look at Michelangelo’s dramatic figures.
Quarter B shifts to modern and diverse perspectives. You’ll work with artists such as Van Gogh, Jacob Lawrence, Grant Wood, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, M.C. Escher, and Leonardo da Vinci. Here the focus is on experimenting with storytelling, symbolism, cultural context, and design. You’ll try everything from narrative collage to pop art, surrealist tessellations, and expressive self-portraits.
By the end of both quarters, you’ll not only have a collection of artworks inspired by great masters, but also your own growing style and creative voice.
