Description
***This course is not available for the Track C July/August learning period.***
AP Research, the second course in the AP Capstone experience, allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest. Students design, plan, and implement a yearlong investigation to address a research question. Through this inquiry, they further the skills they acquired in the AP Seminar course by
learning research methodology, employing ethical research practices, and accessing, analyzing, and synthesizing information. Students reflect on their skill development, document their processes, and curate the artifacts of their scholarly work through a process and reflection portfolio. The course culminates in an academic paper of
4,000–5,000 words (accompanied by a performance, exhibit, or product where applicable) and a presentation with an oral defense.
This course is designed to help learners achieve mastery of the following skills: engaging in research, putting sources in conversation with one another, developing strong reading and writing skills, problem-solving, data analysis, presentation skills, and time management. This emphasis on skills sets this course apart from other AP courses that are, at the very least, as focused on acquisition of content knowledge as they are on the development of a learner’s skill set. The AP College Board’s endgame is to create a pathway for learners to prove that they can not only master the content of the previous AP courses, but also show proficiency in the research, writing, presentation, and collaboration skills required for excellence at the university level.
