Quarter 1 of the 5th-grade adventure includes a fun project about “The Story of Me”. 5th graders embark on a quarter-long journey to answer the question, “What do stories teach us about identity?” Learners will explore their identity and what it means to them. They will learn about early explorers of North America and about different Native American tribes. They will dive into the Earth’s ecosystem and all that it includes. They will develop their understanding of characters and place values of whole and decimal numbers.

Quarter 2 invites 5th graders to “go back in time” and gain knowledge about Colonial America and the 13 colonies. Learners will investigate the economic attractiveness, religious attributes, demographics, geography, educational, and housing lure of colonial America. In math, learners will explore fractions, find and estimate the sums and differences of fractions, and multiply and divide fractions. In language arts, 5th graders will read and decode informational text as well as learn about persuasive writing. Learners will get an opportunity to become engineers and build their own colonial tools through science design challenges (STEM). At the end of the adventure, learners will create a commercial to attract and inform others about their colony.

In Quarter 3, we will continue to learn about how America began. We will learn all about the American Revolution and will end the quarter with our American Revolution Big Project Presentations. Learners will continue to deepen their understanding of fractions and grammar. In science, we will be learning more about matter, energy, and Earth’s systems.

In quarter 4 learners will embark on a passion project. They will explore what they’re passionate about and research careers that might be worthwhile for them in adulthood. For language arts, they will engage with different types of poems, different poetry styles, and figurative language. In math, we will expand our understanding of geometry, quadrilaterals, and graphs. For social studies, we will learn all about the United States government; we will review the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and the three branches of government. Additionally, learners will have the opportunity to learn the 50 U.S. states and capitals. In science, we will explore gravity, distance time graphs, Earth’s systems and cycles, natural disasters, and other weather phenomena.
