Poetry with a Purpose

Get Lit exists because of the desire to increase teen literacy through the spoken word. This organization’s mission statement is, “We use poetry to promote literacy, empower youth, and inspire communities.”

They offer a variety of events; two that may be of interest to our learners are the drop-in classes on Saturdays and open mic nights.

  • Every Saturday kids ages 13-19 can attend a class that is designed for all levels of experience. Teens will work on writing, editing and performing. Professionalism and accountability are also emphasized.  Reservations are not needed, and classes run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Twice a month Git Lit hosts an open mic night for community youth. This is an opportunity for kids to take to the stage and share their poetry. The next open mic night is April 27. Teens wanting to perform need to make a reservation with Monique at Monique@getlit.org.
