Outdoor Study Breaks for Online learners

“I go to nature every day for inspiration in the day’s work.” –Frank Lloyd Wright

Kids spend considerably less time outside than previous generations did.  This comes as no surprise when there are so many indoor gadgets vying for their attention.  However, time in nature can lead to a more productive and pleasant day.

All learners — but perhaps especially those enrolled in online classes should build time into their schedule for a daily dose of nature.  Computers are great, but there is no substitute for going outside. The benefits are numerous.

Time outside:

  • stimulates the senses
  • boosts creativity
  • Increases focus
  • Improves short-term memory
  • improves general health
  • increases gratitude for nature
  • reduces stress
  • decreases anxiety

“We are physically wired to respond to being outdoors,” says Deborah Gilboa, M.D., a Pittsburgh area physician and parenting expert. To get the benefits of going outdoors, kids don’t have to scale a mountain. Walking the dog or taking a quick spin on their bike can do the trick. Ideally, learners will get some exercise when outside, but even if they are sitting still — they will reap the benefits of connecting with nature.
