Description

¡Hola! Students will learn the basics of Spanish through a variety of learning modalities including interactive games, listening to Spanish podcasts, practicing vocabulary sets, having discussions with their peers and more. Students will learn greetings, verb conjugations, basic vocabulary, pronunciation, grammatical structures, and cultural attributes to get a glimpse of the Spanish-speaking world.  Students develop a beginning reading, writing, listening and speaking ability in Spanish, laying the foundation for further study of the language. By the end of this course, students will be able to carry on basic conversations in Spanish.

Spanish 1 Student Reflections:

“My favorite part of this semester was how we had several different ways of learning the material, through a series of podcasts, Quizzes and Interactive language learning websites and through videos where I can see the material we learned being used properly in conversations.”

“This semester, I’ve gotten to a point where I can have full conversations with people in Spanish and understand most of it when I hear other people speaking it. I think my favourite learning device was the Coffeebreak Spanish podcasts because they give more real-life situations and prepare us for them and you get to hear real people speak it. The most challenging resource was probably the videos just because they’re very slow-paced.”

“My biggest area of learning this semester has been on Duolingo because they offer so much new vocabulary on different categories and I never get bored on Duolingo. The most challenging thing for me would have to be putting together sentences in Spanish.”
