iLEAD Online Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Jeanne Champions Play-Based Learning

Staff Jeanne McNiff-Hendzlik iLEAD Online Spotlight 12.2.2025

Mrs. Jeanne McNiff brings a rich background in Early Childhood and Elementary education to her role as a Coachilitator for TK/Kindergarten and Facilitator for CTE Child Development courses at iLEAD Online. After 13 years working in traditional settings, she was drawn to iLEAD Online because of out-of-the-box thinking. Mrs. Jeanne is passionate about incorporating individualized project-based learning and social-emotional development, elements that align perfectly with her expertise in play-based curriculum and outdoor classrooms. Let’s get to know Mrs. Jeanne!

Please tell us about your background and how you came to be at iLEAD Online.

I worked in Early Childhood and Elementary settings for 13 years before coming to iLEAD. I have been with iLEAD Online for almost six years now. I love to work in settings that think outside of the box and provide unique and developmentally appropriate opportunities for learners. My background includes play-based curriculum and outdoor classrooms. iLEAD Online brings project-based learning, individualized learning plans, and social-emotional learning to the forefront as unique opportunities for learners (as well as for facilitators to support). I take pride in supporting these elements of the program.

What is your role at iLEAD Online? What’s the best part about it?

Coachilitator for TK and Kindergarten and Facilitator for CTE Child Development courses. The best part is supporting learners in making growth while having fun and honoring their interests and needs.

What do you LOVE about iLEAD Online? What sets it apart from other schools?

I love iLEAD because the environment is supportive of growth and collaboration. (This includes among staff and the learner community.)

Are you involved in other activities (e.g. clubs, tutoring, community engagement) at iLEAD Online? If not, what are some events you enjoy at iLEAD Online?

I love joining the lower school learners for meetups, especially when we get to gather as a community focusing on trips that connect to our project work or get us outdoors and active. Supporting the magic of relationship building in these crucial early years is a privilege.

In your opinion, what makes a great leader?

“Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader. They set out to make a difference” (L. Haisha).

There are great social-emotional learning activities/opportunities at iLEAD Online. Can you share a story about seeing learners using them in action (or yourself)?

Virtual festivals are always a great time! “Play is our brain’s favorite way of learning” (Diane Ackerman), and so there is nothing better than gathering together as a community to engage in some seasonal-themed adventures. It lifts up learning and building connection with others in ways we could not do without such opportunities.

What does a day in your school life look like?

Each day I have the joy of engaging with learners at Campfires, curating engaging curriculum, and supporting learners and families as they navigate their learning journeys. When I am not busy at work doing that, I am a mom exploring the outdoors with my two young ones or cooking together as a family. I also can often be found with a book or poetry collection stashed away in my tote bag. I enjoy hikes, walks, music, and cafe stops for brain breaks.

Please name five fun facts about you.

  1. I grew up in western New York and love the autumn season there.
  2. I strive to try new adventures outside of my comfort zone, like scuba diving.
  3. I am learning to knit and crochet.
  4. My favorite places in California are the beach, mountains, and Legoland.
  5. I have a garden that we use to make our own sauces, jams, and recipes from.

Mrs. Jeanne’s dedication to creating a supportive, collaborative environment where growth and fun are prioritized shines through in her daily interactions with learners and staff. We are lucky to have her on our team!
