In our Criminal Justice course, learners spent several weeks learning about wrongful convictions and how it happens by studying the real cases of exonerees whose cases were taken on by the Innocence Project. After gaining perspective on eye-witness testimony, interrogations, and court representation, the learners took on the task of preparing a Writ of Innocence to present in mock court. They worked a case the same way the Innocence Project does from selection, identifying and requesting evidence, and going before a court to present their case for exoneration.
It was incredible to hear the first hand stories of wrongful conviction when exonerees Jeffrey Deskovic and Anthony DiPippo visited SCVi on their way to the Innocence Project Convention in San Diego. The Criminal Justice learners had studied Jeffrey’s case in class, and were thrilled to meet him.
