Vampires!

iLEAD Online Social Sciences

***This course is not available for the Track C July/August learning period.***

Myth may seem entirely fictional, but, most myth and legend comes from real places. Vampires are no different. This course traces the history of the vampire from its origins in folklore all the way through our modern-day interpretation of the infamous creature. As we learn about the vampire you will learn valuable research, critical thinking, and note-taking skills as you explore the history, folklore, sociology, and psychology of the monster.

The content and discussion in this course will necessarily engage with topics that may be disturbing to some learners. After all, we are learning about the history of VAMPIRES!  Much of what we cover may be frightening, scaring, hair-raising, terrifying, petrifying, spine-chilling, blood-curdling, chilling, horrifying, fearsome, nerve-racking, unnerving, eerie, sinister, creepy, and downright spooky. The facilitator will flag especially intense content that discusses or represents extreme examples, and we will always do our best to make the classroom a space where we can engage bravely, empathetically, and thoughtfully with content every week. Just remember, we are studying the evolution of the concept of vampires in myth, legend, folktales, literature, and film. So just remember: Actual vampires are not real, even if some of the people we will study are!
