This course examines the major events preceding the founding of the nation, and their significance in creating a new American nation. We will explore and analyze the creation of the new American identity, the development of political thought and tradition, the historical roots that influence the idea of self-government, and the political principles underlying the United States Constitution. We will examine the achievements of the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, as well as the people, events, ideas, and conflicts that shaped the foundation of the American political system and the ways in which diverse groups of citizens participate in it. Finally, we will examine the achievements, challenges and contributions made by the first presidents of our New Republic.
