Q. What can wrap around the Earth 2.5 times every day?
A. The amount of plastic straws used and discarded.

Most people think plastic straws are recyclable – – they aren’t. These little plastic cylinders end up in the ocean and other waterways, landfills, and all sorts of other places.

The tip of the week is “just say no to plastic straws.” Many of us love using straws, but if they are made of plastic, we are contributing to plastic pollution. If you don’t want to give up using straws, try one made of metal or paper. The metal straws can be purchased with small brushes for cleaning.

You can take things a step further and talk to local restaurants that automatically put straws in beverages. Chances are they have no idea about the plastic pollution caused by these seemingly harmless items.

Malibu recently banned plastic straws; hopefully, this is an idea that will spread if we all do our part.
