iLEAD Online Learners Hear from Antarctic and Glacier Scientist Sarah Neuhaus

Sarah Neuhaus glacier scientist guest speaker at iLEAD Online

At iLEAD Online, we love to learn from the experts firsthand. Hearing from professionals helps our learners see the real-life applications of what we’re learning in school.

As an example, last week, iLEAD Online facilitator Abbie Stirling invited an antarctic and glacier scientist from UC Santa Cruz to talk with the learners in her advisory class. The scientist, Sarah Neuhaus, discussed her research, findings, and what it’s like to spend time in Antartica.

Some interesting facts they learned about:

  • How to get to Antarctica.
  • What scientists wear in the field (lots of clothing that all looks the same).
  • That there is melted fresh water under parts of the ice cap where life is proven to be sustainable and how important this is to space exploration.

In addition, Sarah spoke about how her research directly connects to one of Jupiter and Saturn’s moons because both moons also have ice caps with what we believe to be fresh water under them. Scientists believe because of this research there might also be life — microorganisms — living on the moons too!

This session with Sarah Neuhaus exemplifies how learning from experts firsthand enriches our understanding and appreciation of the subjects we study. Through such encounters, iLEAD Online continues to inspire curiosity, foster critical thinking, and prepare learners to navigate the complexities of the world around them.
