AB 1316’s Impact on Our School

  • What the law says: Non-classroom-based charters would be able to claim attendance only for students who live within the county in which the school is authorized. How this would affect iLEAD Online Charter School: For iLEAD Online Charter School, this would mean anyone residing outside of Los Angeles County would no longer be able to attend our school.
  • What the law says: Funding for non-classroom-based charter schools would be based on the amount of in-person, classroom-based instruction provided to students. How this would affect iLEAD Online Charter School: Based on the way our school is set up, we would receive only 70% of our funding, which would limit educational offerings.
  • What the law says: Non-classroom-based schools will be expected to increase the frequency of teacher and student contact. How this would affect iLEAD Online Charter School: Based on how the current law reads, staff would need to be in contact with learners at least every three instructional days (versus a maximum of every 20 days).
  • What the law says: Non-classroom-based charter schools will be allowed to enroll/serve only a number of students based on the student enrollment of their authorizing district. How this would affect iLEAD Online Charter School: If a school district serves 500 students and authorizes three NCB charter schools, then the enrollment of all three NCB charter schools combined cannot exceed 500 students. This will severely limit our enrollment, and likely force us to disenroll current learners.

How to Help Advocate for our School

  • If your legislators are among the seven who currently serve on the committee, we ask that you submit a letter to them stating your opinion. All of the legislators have a “contact me” (or similar feature) on their websites.
  • Contact your local representatives through letter writing and phone calls. You can find your assembly member’s contact info HERE.
  • Share your story of how the iLEAD Online Charter School program, the ability to choose your child’s school, and the support of a credentialed teacher overseeing your child’s personalized learning plan have all benefitted your child.
  • Share the value you have received from MAP testing and state assessment data and how these have helped you, as a parent, understand your child’s academic achievement levels.
  • Share the importance of the iLEAD community and the support it has provided your family.
  • If your learner has an individualized education plan (IEP), share how iLEAD Online Charter School serves your student to meet their unique needs.
